Live Weather Conditions

Real-time weather data for Shark Bay, Langebaan Lagoon. Perfect for planning your kiteboarding session, beach day, or outdoor adventure on South Africa's beautiful West Coast.

Understanding Langebaan's Wind

Langebaan Lagoon has one of the most reliable wind climates in South Africa, and it is the single biggest reason the town has become a world-class kiteboarding destination. In summer (roughly October to March) a strong southerly to south-westerly sea breeze builds almost every afternoon. It is driven by the temperature difference between the cold Atlantic — chilled by the Benguela Current — and the hot interior of the West Coast. On a typical summer day the morning starts calm, the breeze fills in between 11:00 and 13:00, and by mid-afternoon it is blowing a steady 18–25 knots across the lagoon before easing again around sunset.

Winter (May to August) is a different world. The summer thermal switches off and weather is instead dictated by cold fronts sweeping in from the Atlantic. Fronts bring north-westerly winds, cloud and most of the region's annual rain — but between fronts the West Coast serves up still, crystal-clear days that are ideal for birdwatching and photography on the cam.

What the wind direction means at Shark Bay

The cam looks out over the southern shore of the lagoon. A southerly or south-westerly blows side-onshore here — the classic kiteboarding wind, safe because it pushes riders along the shore rather than out to sea. A north-westerly signals an approaching winter front: expect chop on the water and dramatic skies. A rare easterly (berg wind) brings hot, dry air off the interior, often the warmest days of the year.

Reading the forecast like a local

Watch the gust figure, not just the average: Langebaan's summer thermal is smooth, so a small gap between average and gusts (say 20–24 knots) means clean, rideable wind, while a big gap signals unstable frontal weather. Wind on the lagoon is usually 2–4 knots stronger than the town forecast because the water accelerates the breeze. And always cross-check the tide — at spring low tide large sandbanks appear in front of the cam and the rideable area shrinks.

Langebaan Through the Seasons

Summer (Dec–Feb): hot and windy — 25–32 °C days, reliable afternoon southerlies, almost no rain. The lagoon is at its busiest and the cam is full of kites. Autumn (Mar–May): the wind machine winds down, temperatures soften to the low 20s and the veld around the cam turns green with the first rains. Winter (Jun–Aug): cool (8–18 °C), with frontal rain roughly one day in three and superb visibility in between. Spring (Sep–Nov): wildflower season — the West Coast erupts in colour, days warm up fast, and the first summer southerlies return.
